JACQUES COUSTEAU NA AMAZÔNIA: olhar estrangeiro e ambiental

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Jacques-Yves Cousteau's Amazon Expedition (1982-1983), carried out in the final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), considering the impact it had on the construction of new perceptions of the Amazon biome in between the developmental ethos and the projects of economic growth that constituted the national political tonic for the region. The Amazon Expedition resulted in books, newspaper articles, documentaries, interviews, all with international repercussions, contributing to the strengthening of the Amazon as a symbol territory of socio-biodiversity. In this dissertation, the expedition results published by the oceanographer, their environmental understanding, and the construction of a specific reading about the Amazon region were investigated. Part of the research also focuses attention on Cousteau oceanographer's attitudes toward environmental change processes during the expedition. In this sense, the research is guided by a theoretical-methodological stance of Cultural Environmental History, comprising the natural and constructed dimensions of the palpable world, based on the expedition's cultural productions. Among these productions, the central role is destined for the work Jacques Cousteau in the Amazon, published in Brazil still in 1984.
